The Monster Squad

The Monster Squad is a film which first played in theaters in 1987. A group of young boys in a small anonymous American town discover that Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, the Mummy and the Creature from the Black Lagoon have all taken up residence. It seems that Dracula is searching for an amulet, one which can, once every 100 years, open a portal to Limbo. The monsters will then be dragged into Limbo, freeing the world from their dark dominion. Unfortunately, Count Dracula has always managed to thwart the opening of the portal. The time has come again for the portal to be opened, and the boys of The Monster Squad are all that stand between Dracula and his nefarious scheme to destroy the amulet and free the monsters to terrorize the world forever.

Duncan Regehr plays a delightfully evil Count Dracula who has no hesitation to kill anyone in his path. The squad gets help from the most unlikely sources, and the story also includes the classic Frankenstein monster tale when the little sister befriends the monster.

Duncan was nominated by the 1988 Saturn Awards for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Dracula. The costumes, music and Andre Gower were also nominated in their categories for Saturns. The director, Fred Dekker, won the Silver Raven Award at the Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film and the six children won the award for Young Artists.

Duncan attended Monster Mania a convention for the twentieth anniversary of Monster Squad honoring Fred Dekker, the director. You can see some pictures from that convention here.

(This movie is available on VHS and DVD. The 20th anniversary DVD edition was released in July 2007. There is also a  DVD called Monster Squad Forever that is a documentary about the making of The Monster Squad, but this is the same documentary that was included in the two-disc version of the DVD release.)
