The Blue and the Gray

The Blue and The Gray is a mini-series about the Civil War which aired in 1982 on network television. It tells the story of a young southern boy who, when war reaches his area, refuses to fight. He is forced to leave his home and travels north to stay with another branch of his family. A talented artist, the boy eventually lands a job with a newspaper and is commissioned to travel around the country to draw pictures of what he sees during the war. He travels around the war zone from company to company, and thus we are given a good view of what the war was really like. The miniseries shows that not only was the United States divided by the Civil War, but individual families were also.

Duncan Regehr plays Captain Randolph, who is in charge of one of the companies in the war. He finds his men having a party with men from the other side. He breaks the party up, and is prepared to take the visiting soldiers prisoner. He is swayed by the appeal of one of his men, though, who have given his word that they men would not be hurt.
