The Banker is a film about
a serial killer who preyed on women. A television reporter stumbles on the story
of the bizarre murder of a high-class prostitute, but the story is taken away
from her and given to her station's star. Appalled at the way the murder is
handled, the reporter makes a public declaration about the heinousness of the
crime and the callowness of the press. Her boss is prepared to fire her, but
public outcry in her favor causes him to assign her to the story. The killer is
fascinated with her, but she doesn't realize the danger she is in. The cop who
is trying to track down the murderer just happens to be the reporter's ex-lover,
and they rekindle their affair as they turn from hunters to hunted.
Duncan Regehr plays Spaulding Osborne, a wealthy businessman who has a fascination with South American rituals and the sport of the hunt. While on the surface the story is a simple murder mystery, there is an underlying theme about power and decadence. It is set, very appropriately, in the LA area.
(This movie is available on both VHS and DVD. It has also been released in a four-movie DVD edition that includes three other movies called "Crime Thriller Movies.")
